Effective Listening for Students

Growing up, I often heard my father say:

“I know you hear me. I don’t know if you are listening to me."

At the time, I didn’t understand what he meant.

Now, I do.

Hearing and listening are not the same. It is

completely possible to hear without listening. Too many people hear but do not listen.

They hear the words.

They do not listen to what the words say.

I, regrettably, was among them.

Listening, and listening effectively, is a skill that is very important, and it is a skill that can be learned.

While listening, and listening effectively, is important for everyone, students have some unique needs to listen effectively.

So, how important, really, is effective listening?

In the article: “Psychologist: The No. 1 soft skill highly successful people use at work—‘It’s like having a superpower’”, Sarah Sarkis, a psychologist and Exos’ senior director of performance psychology, explains: Follow the link to access the article)

While listening effectively is important for everyone, it could be agrued that listening effectively is especially imprtant for students. Students may have more expected of them in terms of listening to, and understanding the information being transmitted to them Efective listening is a necesary skill, which can be learned.
