Effective Listening

 

Growing up, I often heard my father say:

“I know you hear me. I don’t know if you are listening to me."

At the time, I didn’t understand what he meant.

Now, I do.

Hearing and listening are not the same. It is completely possible to hear without listening. Too many people hear but do not listen.

They hear the words.

They do not listen to what the words say.

I, regrettably, was among them.

Listening, and listening effectively, is a skill that is very important, and it is a skill that can be learned.
